The Road to UVic Law

High School

  • Graduation with university entrance requirements   

University or College

  • Complete a Bachelor's Degree or a minimum of 3 years towards a degree at an accredited institution
  • Choose any undergraduate discipline  
  • We accept students each year from a wide variety of programs, everything from fine arts to computer engineering.  We do not discriminate between applicants on the basis of the degree program or majors completed
  • Develop excellent time management, study habits and exam writing skills
  • Include courses that will develop research, writing and analytical skills, all of which are essential for success in law school
  • Focus on GPA. Admission to law school is competitive and GPA is one of the primary criteria of evaluation

Law School Admissions Test (LSAT)
The LSAT is a standardized test designed to measure key skills essential for success in law school:

  • Reading comprehension
  • Organization and management of information
  • Critical thinking
  • Analysis and evaluation of the reasoning and arguments of others

Admissions Process

 

  • Three 1st year admissions categories:  Regular, Aboriginal, Special Access
  • Evaluation based on undergraduate GPA and LSAT score
  • Bonus points are awarded for extracurricular activities, community involvement, work experience and personal characteristics
  • The Road to Bar Admission

 UVic Law School

  • 3 year J.D. (Juris Doctor) Program
  • Compulsory First Year Curriculum
  • Optional Law Co-op Program
  • Optional exchange programs with law schools throughout the world
  • Areas of expertise in intellectual property, environmental law, Asia-Pacific/international law, dispute resolution and Aboriginal law
  • Concurrent degree programs with Business and Public Administration
  • Extensive mooting program
After UVic Law school?
  • Select the province in which you wish to practice law
  • Work for a qualified lawyer for one year after graduation
  • Pass the provincial Professional Legal Training Course (PLTC)
  • Call to the Bar
