LL.B. or JD? UVic Law discusses the issue
In recent years, a number of Canadian common law schools have changed the name of their Bachelor of Laws degree (LL.B.) to a Juris Doctor degree (JD). The University of Toronto was the first to do so in 2001, followed in 2008 by Queen’s University and in 2009 by UBC, Osgoode Hall and the University of Western Ontario.
Other Canadian law schools are currently debating whether they should change to the JD designation and the question is being actively discussed at UVic Law. Students held a plebiscite in December 2009, in which approximately 65 per cent of the student body voted and 93 per cent of those voters were in favour of changing the title to JD. UVic Law alumni are now being consulted to obtain their views.
Please note: If UVic Law should adopt the JD designation, the program requirements for a JD degree would be exactly the same as the program requirements for the existing LL.B. degree.
