Exchange terms
Students studying together in the library.
To further enrich the curriculum, the Law Faculty has developed a number of student exchange agreements with law schools both within and outside Canada. These exchanges provide opportunities for students to study law at other universities for credit towards their UVic LL.B. They also enable students to learn about different legal systems, and permit them to prepare themselves for an increasingly globalized legal environment in Canada and elsewhere.
Our partner institutions include two Canadian law schools that UVic Law students may attend in either the fall or spring term. Law students have the option of studying civil law in French at Laval University in Quebec City or they can stay closer to home and take advantage of the program selection at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
Very popular with UVic law students are exchanges to Australia and the Netherlands. The Faculty of Law at Adelaide University in Australia offers students the opportunity to study at one of the oldest law schools in the common law world. The Free University (Vrije Universiteit), located in Amsterdam, and the University of Utrecht both offer a wide range of teaching and research activities which reflect the international relations that those universities foster. Exchanges have also been established at the University of Limerick in Ireland, the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, the University of Sydney in Australia and Arizona State University.
Students may apply for Law 352 Exchange Term in the fall or spring terms, as applicable. Entry into the exchange program is based on academic performance, involvement in student activities, and the relevance of the proposed program of study to the student's LL.B. program. The number of students able to participate in each exchange is limited. Students must have completed the first year of the program to be eligible to participate in an exchange.
